The Diputación of Málaga have completed a comprehensive programme of signposting in order to facilitate access and awareness of the resources, services and tourist products in the Axarquia region. Amongst other programmes of action being undertaken, at the Comarcal level, is the provision and signposting of Long Distance walk GR 242 which passes through the Sierra Tejeda and Almijara. The signposting which also includes notice boards situated in Periana, Canillas de Albaida and Frigiliana and wooden markers strategically placed along the route. The main purpose of this programme is to gain official approval for the route by the Andalucian Federation of Mountaineering (FAM). The GR 242 route skirts along the Sierra Tejeda and Almijara for some eighty kilometers in four stages:

Stage 1:

Periana – Alcaucin – Canillas de Aceituno = 17,6 Km

Stage 2:

Canillas de Aceituno – Sedella – Salares – Canillas de Albaida – Cómpeta =25,9 Km

Stage 3:

Cómpeta – Frigiliana = 23,5 Km

Stage 4:

Frigiliana – Nerja = 14,0 Km

A group of walkers from Cómpeta completed the GR242 route in Autumn 2011 using hand held GPS equipment.
